1,001 Nights: 10

"Feathertop: A Moralized Legend" by Nathaniel Hawthorne

A witch transforms a scarecrow into a man and tries to have him blend and marry into polite society. When the scarecrow sees himself in the mirror, he realizes he is a poor excuse for a human being and offs himself.

"I saw a maiden undeath a laurel" (Canzioniere, 30) by Petrarch (poem)

About Petrarch's first encounter with his love Laura. He forever holds the memory of seeing her.

"On Books" by Michel de Montaigne (essay)

Montaigne's reading habits. He prefers the ancients for their moral instruction. If he reads anything and gets bored, he puts it aside. He often forgets things that he reads, sometimes revisiting the former books and getting surprised to see his notes in it. When Montaigne finishes reading a book, he makes a summary of it and gives his opinion of it.
