Destiny's Child, The Writing's on the Wall (1999)

Oof, this is bad. What's most disappointing about it is that Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland are really good singers (it's harder to tell about the other two performers on this album, one of whom was no longer with the group when they performed at the Super Bowl, live shot to the left).

The lyrics are shallow, and I mean more so than what you'd find on your typical pop album. The beats suck, too.

Fortunately, cream rises to the top. Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland clearly went on to have successful careers. 1999 was just a wretched time for music and culture. Our media was telling us we were literally at the end of history. It was the end of the two-polar world (Russia and the USA), and if a Y2K crash didn't take us all down, it seemed all that was left to do was sit back and let the US rule the world. And then 9/11 came and gave everyone's head a shake.
